Ghosts in the Snow Dubric Bryerly Tamara Siler Jones 9780553587098 Books

A fusion of police procedural and fantasy that works surprisingly well. The main character, Dubric, is a castellan at Castle Faldorrah who has been afflicted with a curse: He sees ghosts. In particular, he sees ghosts of murder victims, who come to him for the justice that only he can provide. Now, a serial killer is loose at his castle and the ghosts are piling up, but his leads are few, and those that he has point in a direction that means nothing but trouble : toward Risley, the grandson of the King himself. Can Dubric apprehend the killer before any more die and without causing a war? Welll ... read and find out :)

Joking aside, this is a rip-roaring read that sucked me in ; I started out only meaning to read a single chapter, and ended up finishing the entire book in one day. Dubric himself, a 60 year old war veteran who was cursed after renouncing religion after the death of his wife decades ago, is a solid and interesting character, and the details of the world and its backstory are lightly sketched in a way that is surprisingly effective, giving you enough to intrigue you and know there's more there without bogging you down. Her prose style is simple and straightforward in a way that I really enjoy as opposed to the artiness that seems to have invaded much of fantasy these days except for a few awkardisms that sound just a touch too modern (having a gossiping character describe two characters having sex as "boppin' " for example). The story is well paced without seeming rushed except for a few places (the part with Lars's father seemed to drag a bit) *and* keeps you guessing till the end. Even the ghosts (which *constantly* attend Dubric) are both gruesome and lively, and blackly fun to watch. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is having finished it and thus learning the identity of the killer, its reread value isn't going to be as strong. But I will definitely be going on to check out the next book in the series and spend more time with Dubric and his ghosts!

Ghosts in the Snow Dubric Bryerly Tamara Siler Jones 9780553587098 Books Reviews

Too many repetitive gruesome descriptions of murders.
Holy crow. That was a bloody good read. I'm not sure how if that should be hyphenated... bloody-good? Because... yeah. Lots of blood. And...other parts. Still. Check it out.
I've always loved this series and was thrilled to find it available on . Part fantasy, part mystery, part forensics... "Ghosts in the Snow" is an intriguing and enthralling combination that will keep you reading long past your bed time. I highly recommend this title and the 2 books that come after it to complete the trilogy !!!
Like this book because it is different and held my interest. The location and era of the book was never clear. It was a fantasy place and time. I like that but wished I knew more about that. Such as, was this a different dimension, a different world, a future world? It had murder and romance.
A procedural forensic novel set in a fantasy setting. Great concept. Dubric Byerly is an aging castellan who must find justice for any one slain or be haunted their ghosts for as long as he is alive. Non-standard hero, who is very human.

The plot progressions is wonderful. I found this novel to be a tense page turner. When I went back and read it a second time, all the clues are there for the reader to figure it out for themselves. How this book didn't end up on a bestseller list is beyond me.
Take the heinous crimes of Jack the Ripper, ramped up a notch or two, add the thrills and chills of a well-written crime novel, mix in the oppressive atmosphere most often found in dark fantasy novels, and what you come up with is Ghosts in the Snow, a superbly crafted and seamless mix of seemingly disparate genres.

Dubric Bryerly is the castellan of Castle Faldorrah, responsible for the safety and well-being of his master's, Lord Brushgar's, domain. When an unknown killer begins savagely murdering servant girls, more than Dubric's reputation is on the line. Cursed by the Goddess Malanna after his wife's murder some forty years ago, he is haunted by the ghosts of the dead...literally. They appear before him in a flash of blinding pain, wailing silently, lamenting their deaths. And until Dubric finds their killer, the ghosts remain with him, tormenting him as they grow in boldness and strength.

Used to dealing with murders born out of drunken rages or domestic disputes, the recent spate of murders baffles him. The murderer eludes Dubric's grasp, leaving no clues and no witnesses. All Dubric knows is that an innocent linen maid, Nella, has become the object of the murderer's twisted desire. Nella has a protector, however, in the dashing Lord Risley. Unfortunately, as bodies continue to pile up, the few clues Dubric and his team have found point to Lord Risley as the prime suspect. Now Dubric must decide if he's willing to gamble his life and the kingdom he vowed to protect on Risley's guilt, for if he's right, Faldorrah will be thrust into war, and if he's wrong, another innocent life will be lost when the real killer strikes again.

When I read this book for the first time, somewhere around 2005, I didn't know it was the first of a trilogy. All I knew was that it was an exhilarating, if gruesome, breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre. I'd never heard of anyone combining a forensic-style crime storyline with the fantasy genre. Heck, if anyone'd asked me, I wouldn't have had the first clue how to go about doing that. Somehow, Tamara Siler Jones' twisted little brain (and I mean that in the best of ways) managed to concoct this unique and inventive tale and I congratulate her for it.
