To preface my following review, I want to disclose that this is the third time I've read "My Booky Wook." I cannot exactly remember when I first learned about Russell Brand. What I saw was this lanky, demure, tall, lascivious man. I decided to read up on him well before reading his book for the first time. Here was this drug and sex addict -- looking to get his next fix. The media loved to follow him around, as he was a sort of catnip for paparazzi. Reports suggested that he would go on angry tirades, sleep with countless women every week, and demanded the spotlight. After reading this book for the third time... Well, I cannot say they were wrong.

Brand's first (there are two) memoir (a comical irony to his well-staged narcissism) is a tale of addition and amense. He explains a painful childhood and upbringing that is tragic to read, but made lighter with Brand's wit. I sort of felt like a voyeur in a horror show, as he described abuse, poverty, and neglect. It fits perfectly as a primer for a life of rebellion and drugs.

As an addict, Brand is (now) a steward for getting clean. Despite his stories of addiction and drug use, he doesn't necessarily glorify the experiences. Rather, he masterfully extolls the pleasure he sought (and sometimes got), while getting the reader a picture of him scrunched over tinfoil, desperate for a hit, and dying day by day.

His way with words navigates the reader through the confusing, amorphous nature of sex addiction. In the book, he lays out the single best definition of addiction I've ever read, "Addiction, by definition, is a compulsive behavior that you cannot control or relinquish, in spite of its destructive consequences. And if the story I am about to recount proves nothing else, it demonstrates that this formula can be applied to sex just as easily as it can be to drugs or alcohol."

If you find yourself studying for a standardized exam with a vocabulary section (i.e., ACT, GRE, or SAT), you should read this book. Brand's grasp on grammar is nearly unmatched. One moment he can be writing in cockney slang, the next he'll pull out a vernacular that's probably more common in the stuffy halls of Oxford. Brand seems to be an autodidact, but keeps the language of where he came from close to his heart -- it's a brilliant confluence of lower and upper class diction.

This is definitely worth a read, and will surprise you. Russell Brand is a top-notch writer; don't let his celebrity status downplay his literary ability. One of my favorite books!

I agree that Brand’s vocabulary is extensive and he’s obviously brilliant often crossing that fine line into madness. Russell was a loner and a misfit from an early age leading to rebelliousness and self-destructiveness. His out of control behavior led him to lie, cheat, and steal, even from his own beloved mother and Nan, which is sad. There were no boundaries he wouldn’t ignore. However, this got him into some horrifying situations. Yet he barged ahead and blew nearly every opportunity that came his way and sabotaged relationships that provided the love and acceptance he longed for. He was like a bull in the china shop of life. It may be amusing to read of his exploits, but they shouldn’t be celebrated. Eventually, he was coerced into rehab for alcohol and drugs and then sex addiction. I’m glad he was able to find his way out of his downward spiral. I saw his recent TV special about changing the world, which prompted me to read this book. I love that he’s a vegetarian and an animal lover. I think he’s talented and this is a well written book documenting his out-of-control life and journey back to a bit of sanity.
I am a fan of Russell Brand and after reading My Booky Wook, became an even bigger fan. His voice is infused throughout its pages, making it impossible to read without hearing Brand's actual voice - its cadence and tone - in one's own mind. Reading his words is very much like listening to him in an interview or comedy routine.

It is hard for many to be so brutally honest, and this is something I enjoy about Brand's storytelling and humor. He doesn't hold back, doesn't try to make things palatable for the masses, doesn't pretend to be someone he's not. While some may find his antics to be off-putting, it made me like him more. How much better would life be if everyone were as authentic? It may be a bit more disturbing, but certainly more enjoyable.

He seems to hold nothing back as he brings the reader through his journey from a challenging childhood, battles with addiction, and emerging to the other side. Many who would follow on a similar path would not have the fortitude (of body or mind) to achieve the success Brand has enjoyed (success in that he is alive to tell the tale, all neurons firing). There were certainly parts that were difficult to read, but his honesty as a fallible human is truly refreshing... which is sad because we are all imperfect, but reluctant to let others know those imperfections.

This is a book I will read again and strongly recommend. If you're a Brand fan, it will only make you like him more. No judgement.
