I recently heard Carissa Woodwyk speak at an adoptive mamas' retreat and felt compelled to buy this book immediately afterward. I have to be honest - even though my daughter has been home with us for almost two years, I had never put much weight in creating a Life Book for her. I naively did not understand. As an avid blogger, her entire life after she came became our daughter is documented in great detail. But her life before us? Not very much of it is known. Although we are an open book about her past for her, she's still a little too young to be asking many questions. Her time before us is an important part of her life that she needs to know about, as much as she can. How can she learn how to tell others about her past (if she wants to) if we don't teach her how to do it?

My eyes have been opened to the need of a Life Book for my daughter, in part because of this book. This is a project that I am now excited to work on! "Before You Were Mine" has been a tremendous resource in planning for it. It offers so much information ... all of the reasons WHY a Life Book is important ... a Biblical perspective of their life as an adoptee and scripture references to help you show your child that they ARE important and they are NOT a mistake ... many outside-the-box ideas for finding out information about your child's past when there isn't much to go on ... and so much more.

If you are an adoptive parent, PLEASE read this book! It is the only one you will need to get your child's Life Book created. The book is a wealth of information and will truly help you on your quest to write a Life Book for your child! Blessings to you on this journey!

Before You Were Mine Tebos and Woodwyk 9781932902693 Books Reviews

I am reading and soaking it all in right now...can't wait to start lifebooks for both of our adopted boys. This is a much needed tool especially for our oldest son in his healing process!
Looking forward to readying this on a snowy winter day. I work with adoptees and am always looking for resources that I can refer to adoptive parents and older adoptees. Love the title and cover! Thanks!
This book has turned out to be a great resource and encouragement for our adoption. We are adopting internationally. I was afraid this book would only have advice for domestic adoptions, but it proved me wrong! The authors do a great job of giving tons of advice and examples on how to effectively prepare a Lifebook for adopted children. Would highly recommend to anyone that's wanting some help on this matter.
This book is better than I thought. It answers many concerns about how to tell a child they are adopted. The focus is to present adoption as a positive, and give the child available information on their birth parents. Content takes a very Christ-centered approach, complete with Bible verses that apply to the child and the adoption process. Very specific directions are given to prepare a "Lifestory" scrapbook for the child, with photos and information about their native country/habitat, and information about their birth parents.
This book was recommended to me by a fellow adoptive mama. I LOVE it. It is the perfect book that gives you an idea of what a life book is, and what it isn't. And also helps you have a nice starting point-- because the lifebook task can be overwhelming to get started.
This is a very special "find" for those adopting families for whom spirituality is central. The presented information is both spiritually sound AND psychologically sound. I was both very pleased and very touched to find such a thoughtfully conceived and well-written book. It is accessible to even the busiest parent, but it is not a "cookie cutter" approach to the life book. It goes one step further, and it inspires. Thank you so very much.
Excellent Book for families with adopted children. exhaustive list of questions to ask & answer about your child. Some are impossible to answer (birth family) if your child is from China so those ones are challenging especially since the author encourages you to still include info about birth parents, but you really need "creativity" when dealing with those questions. I wish there were more samples or templates for those of us with lack of creativity in that area. The info is like a big black hole & the hole is bigger the older your child is when adopted. It's an important topic with very few answers.
